Throughout the years, event planners
have sought unique ways to approach celebrating anniversary
parties. Most successful parties involve a theme tied
into the anniversary tradition (see anniversary
traditions). Below are some ideas collected from fellow
event planners' most successful anniversary parties:
Have a table to display favorite
photographs of the couple throughout the years. Make
sure there is at least one wedding photograph. One older
couple had their original wedding attire on mannequins
at the entrance near the guest book and photo display
table. Because they were married in the 1940's the bridal
attire was not only a work of art, but a historical piece
as the groom was married in his military uniform.
Have a guest book at the entrance
(near the photo table) and encourage guests to write a
message to the anniversary couple when they sign in.
Make sure every table has a lovely
touch. Although matching floral centerpieces is classic
and perfectly acceptable, consider something unique. International
event planner John Daly of John Daly Inc. International
mixes up different sized tables (i.e. rectangular, circular,
square), and incorporates different shaped tablecloths,
chair covers, napkins and centerpieces. Although the patterns
may differ, he ensures the color scheme is consistent.
When a guest walks into the reception, the feeling should
be one of awe and that thought and care have embraced
every detail of the event.
Have a Memory Presentation during
the reception. Usually this is after dinner just prior
to dessert and is a surprise to the anniversary couple.
To do this, you will need some advance preparation and
the help of a professional editor/videographer. Gather
photos and old movie/video clips, love letters from the
couple to each other and create a video where all of these
are put together with background music, sound bites, etc.
Some families record their personal anniversary greetings
to the couple and include these at the end of the video
as a toast of sorts. This is especially nice if there
are members who cannot attend the anniversary party but
they get a chance to wish the couple a happy anniversary
on video anyway.

Designate someone to take a photo
of each guest as they arrive. Then, assemble all the
photos in a scrapbook or collage as a memento for the anniversary
couple to take home.
Provide a special moment for the
anniversary couple. Perhaps it is a slow dance to "their"
song followed by being whisked away in a private horse-drawn
carriage ride under the stars with sparkling bubbly.
No anniversary party is complete
without a lovely cake. Make sure it is displayed prominently
in the room for all to enjoy.
Make sure the entertainment is appropriate
for the couple. For example, a diamond anniversary couple
may prefer big band to rock and roll. Make sure you communicate
with your band or DJ in advance. It's a good idea to get
a list of the couple's favorite songs in advance so you
can give them to the bandleader or DJ.
During the toast, encourage all guests
to say something about the couple. Make sure you notify
your MC (DJ or band leader) so a cordless mic may be used
for this.
Have a fashion show showcasing
all the fashion changes over the years the couple has been
married (this is especially fun around 25+ year anniversaries).
Renew vows. More couples of
all ages are enjoying this affirmation of love and commitment.
No matter what the anniversary year, being married takes
commitment and dedication. Why not reaffirm this commitment
in front of the family and friends who have been there for
the couple? From simple vow exchanges at the reception site
itself to a vow exchange in a house of worship, one can
recreate the original marriage ceremony or tailor it to
suit how the relationship now is and intends to go forward.
Many people ask what kinds of tradition
and attire are appropriate. The answer is that it is entirely
up to the anniversary-celebrating couple. Vow renewal receptions
almost always include a cake and champagne toast. Some couples
have wanted to wear wedding attire, but most choose an outfit
appropriate to the style of the event (formal, casual, etc).
